Hybrid teams drifting apart

Sound familiar?

  • “Colleagues who work remotely barely know each other in person.”
  • “People from different offices never really connect.”
  • “Team days feel like work, not a chance to build real bonds.”

The Experience

Vienna’s grand coffeehouses are a listed part of the city’s heritage — rooms where composers, painters and writers once argued over a single cup for hours. Teams step into that world with the GoQuest app, chasing missions that read the city through its cafes, music and art.

Missions can be tackled in any order. Teams decode a clue from a composer’s story, photograph an ornate detail, role-play an order at the counter, or match a famous pastry to the house that made it. Every upload is scored at once on a live leaderboard.

The finale brings everyone together for a blind coffee-and-cake tasting showdown, where teams name what they are served for bonus points. Each mission has added one culture card to a shared board, so the room finishes with one shared picture of Vienna.

It runs for about three hours on foot through a central cafe district, for ten to three hundred people in teams of four to six. Teams self-guide by GPS, so Phoenix staff are at the start and finish only. We run it in Vienna, and map the format to other European cities on request.

The Takeaways

Reading an unfamiliar city rewards teams that share what they notice. One person spots the clue, another knows the history, a third speaks a little German — and the mission only moves when they pool it. It is the same habit that keeps hybrid teams from drifting apart.

Ordering at the counter and talking to cafe staff pushes quieter members to step forward in a low-stakes way. Small wins of connection build through the morning, so by the tasting finale a group of near-strangers is laughing and competing as one team.

Because missions are open in any order on a shared clock, teams keep making light, fast decisions about where to go next and what to skip. They learn to commit together quickly, back the call, and adjust when a cafe is busy rather than stalling.

In the debrief we link the quest to work: how the team shared knowledge, included everyone and decided under a clock. Each group leaves with two or three habits to carry back, and HR receives a short written summary within three working days.

Program flow

  1. Welcome & app set-up · 0–20 min

Teams gather at a central cafe, download GoQuest and run a quick practice mission. Facilitators set the story of Vienna's coffeehouse culture, explain scoring and safety, hand out the quarter map and open the shared leaderboard.

  2. Culture missions, wave one · 20–75 min

Teams move through the cafe quarter solving missions in any order — composer clues, ornate details, counter role-plays, pastry matches. Each upload is scored live and adds a culture card to the room's shared board while teams move at their own pace.

  3. Mid-point regroup · 75–90 min

Teams check in at a GPS point in the app to check the leaderboard, bank their culture cards and re-plan. Many split up here, weighing which higher-value missions are still worth chasing in the time that remains.

  4. Culture missions, wave two · 90–150 min

With a sharper route, teams chase the richer missions and finish any clips or clues they started. Bonus missions unlock late, so a smart final loop can lift a mid-table team several places before the trail closes.

  5. Tasting showdown & board · 150–170 min

Everyone returns for a blind coffee-and-cake tasting, naming what they are served for bonus points while the shared culture board is revealed in full. Facilitators confirm the final leaderboard and award the top teams.

  6. Debrief & HR summary · 170–180 min

A guided debrief links sharing, inclusion and quick decisions to work. Each group writes down two or three habits to keep, and we capture the themes for the HR summary sent within three working days.

The Phoenix debrief

The game ends. The learning starts.

Every Phoenix program closes with a guided debrief. These are the questions for Vienna Coffeehouse Quest:

  1. Which mission did your team solve fastest, and what made it click?
  2. When did someone’s knowledge surprise the rest of the team?
  3. How did you decide where to go next when the clock was running?
  4. Who stepped forward today that you do not usually hear from?
  5. What is one way your team will stay connected across locations?

Frequently asked questions

How many people can take part?

From ten up to three hundred, in teams of four to six. Because teams self-guide by GPS, there is no extra staff on the route — larger groups scale by adding teams, and for very large events we stagger the start times.

How long does it take?

About three hours on foot, including the welcome, both mission waves, the tasting showdown and the debrief. Travel to the meeting point is separate.

Is it suitable for everyone?

Yes. It is a walking quest at an easy pace with regroup points and seated cafe stops. Tell us about any mobility or dietary needs and we will plan around them.

What happens in bad weather?

Much of the quest sits inside cafes and arcades, so light rain is no problem. In heavy weather we shift more missions indoors or move to a covered venue version.

Can it be customised for us?

Yes. We can add your company milestones or values as bonus missions and brand the culture board. Custom content and the tasting need about three weeks' lead time.

Can you run it in other cities?

Yes. The format maps to other European cafe cities on request; tell us the city and date and we will scope a route and tasting.
