About

In Chinese culture, dragons are a symbol of good luck, representing great power, wisdom and dignity. The dragon dance is performed by a team who, through cooperation and harmony, move a long, flexible and colourful dragon to mimic the flowing movements of this mythical creature.

In Golden Serpent Dance, teams design and construct their own Chinese dragon, choosing its colours and character. Every part, from the head to the tail, is built by the team itself.

Then, equipped with musical instruments, each team composes a musical score and rehearses its own dance routine.

Finally, with their uniquely designed dragons, teams work in harmony to put on a dignified and coordinated performance. Points are awarded for creativity, performance and teamwork, and the finale is a colourful celebration for everyone watching.

Learning outcomes

In Golden Serpent Dance, teams use creativity, ingenuity and project management skills to design and construct their dragon. They assess the task, then form specialist units that work in parallel before bringing all the elements together.

A successful construction phase depends on cross-functional cooperation and active communication, so that every part comes together as planned. Specialist units have to agree on sizes and fixings early, or the dragon will not hold together when it starts to move.

Composing the music and choreographing the dance rely on creative thinking and collaboration, as every idea has to work for the whole team.

Pulling it all together in rehearsals and the final performance calls for strong leadership and teamwork. Moving a dragon gracefully only works when every person is in step, a powerful reminder of what harmony looks like in a team.
