Hanoi Old Quarter Quest
Bring the 36 trade streets back to life.

Multi-generation, multi-cultural teams
Sound familiar?
- “Our people barely know colleagues outside their own team.”
- “Younger and older staff rarely mix or share what they know.”
- “New joiners say the company feels like strangers in one building.”
The Experience
Hanoi’s Old Quarter grew from thirty-six craft streets, each named for the trade it once sold — silk, silver, tin, paper, bamboo. Teams step into that living map with the GoQuest app, chasing missions that bring each old guild back to life.
Missions can be tackled in any order. Teams photograph a hidden guild sign, role-play a market haggle for a trade token, decode how a street earned its name, or film a short clip with a working artisan. Every upload is scored at once, and the standings move live on a shared leaderboard.
Each guild a team completes unlocks one stamped map tile. Back at base the tiles come together: the whole room builds a single Old Quarter map on a physical board. Speed, accuracy and how well teams share clues decide who tops the leaderboard.
It runs for three hours on foot through the Old Quarter, for ten to three hundred people in teams of four to six. Teams self-guide by GPS, so Phoenix staff are at the start and finish only. We run it in Hanoi, and can map the format to other old towns on request.
The Takeaways
Finding missions across a busy, unfamiliar quarter puts adaptability to work. Teams read the map, pick a route, and change plan when a street is crowded or a mission is busy — the same judgement people use when priorities shift at work.
The haggles, artisan clips and guild puzzles reward people who talk to strangers and to each other. Quieter members often carry the local knowledge, so teams that listen widely move faster. It is a low-stakes way to practise reaching across ages, roles and cultures to get something done.
Because missions can be done in any order and the clock is shared, teams must decide what is worth their time. They weigh easy points against richer ones, split up and regroup, and learn that a quick shared decision beats a perfect plan made too late.
In the debrief we map the game back to work: where the team aligned, where it drifted, and how it made calls under time pressure. Each group leaves with two or three agreements it can use on Monday, and HR receives a short written summary within three working days.
Program flow
-
Welcome & app set-up · 0–20 min
Teams form, download GoQuest and run a two-minute practice mission in the meeting point. Facilitators set the story, the rules and the safety brief, hand out the map, and start the shared leaderboard so everyone sees the first points land.
-
Guild missions, wave one · 20–80 min
Teams head into the quarter and tackle missions in any order — photographing guild signs, decoding street names, filming short clips with artisans. Every upload is scored live. Teams move at their own pace while the leaderboard shifts.
-
Mid-point regroup · 80–95 min
Teams check in at a GPS point in the app to bank their tiles, check the leaderboard and re-plan. Many split up here or trade clues with their own members, deciding which guilds are still worth chasing in the time that is left.
-
Guild missions, wave two · 95–155 min
With a sharper plan, teams chase the higher-value guilds and finish the clips they started. The scoring tightens as bonus missions unlock, so a smart final route can move a mid-table team up several places before time is called.
-
Map assembly & winners · 155–170 min
Back at base, every team brings its stamped tiles to a physical board and the room builds one complete Old Quarter map. Facilitators confirm the final leaderboard, award the top teams and replay a few of the best artisan clips.
-
Debrief & HR summary · 170–180 min
A guided debrief links navigation, trading and quick calls to work: how the team decided, shared and adapted. Each group writes down two or three agreements, and we capture the themes for the HR summary sent within three working days.
The game ends. The learning starts.
Every Phoenix program closes with a guided debrief. These are the questions for Hanoi Old Quarter Quest:
- Which missions did your team go for first, and why those?
- When a street was crowded or a plan failed, how did you change course?
- Whose local knowledge or idea helped the team most today?
- How did you decide what to skip when time was short?
- What is one way your team will share knowledge better at work?

Frequently asked questions
How many people can take part?
From ten up to three hundred, in teams of four to six. Because teams self-guide by GPS, there is no extra staff on the route — larger groups scale by adding teams, and for very large events we stagger the start.
How long does it take?
Three hours on foot, including the welcome, both mission waves, the map assembly and the debrief. Travel to the meeting point is separate.
Is it suitable for all fitness levels?
Yes. It is a walking quest at an easy pace with regroup points and seating at base. Let us know about any mobility needs and we will plan a shorter route.
What happens if it rains?
The quarter is walkable in light rain with umbrellas, and many missions sit under cover. In heavy weather we shift more missions to covered streets or move to an indoor venue version.
Can it be customised for us?
Yes. We can weave in your company values, milestones or induction facts as bonus missions, and brand the map board. Custom content needs about three weeks' lead time.
Can you run it in other cities?
Yes. The same format maps to other old towns and districts on request; tell us the city and date and we will scope a route.
