The challenge it solves

A team that rarely works side by side

Sound familiar?

  • “We meet on video calls far more than in person.”
  • “People from different offices barely know each other.”
  • “Our trips are fun, but nothing changes afterwards.”

The Experience

Danube Quest turns Budapest into a game board for your team. Each team sets off with a phone, a team name and a route of missions on both banks of the Danube, from the Parliament and the riverside promenade up to the Buda Castle district. Teams choose their own order, so planning starts at the very first corner.

Missions run on GoQuest, our own team game app. Some ask for a photo or a short video, some hide an answer in the city’s long history, and some send teams to talk to locals, learn a Hungarian phrase or find a taste of paprika at the Great Market Hall.

Every answer scores points, and a live leaderboard keeps the race close.

The quest ends by the river, where teams combine the clues they collected to crack one last code. Add a Danube cruise or a dinner with a view to round off the day. We run it in Budapest, with a Vienna edition for groups travelling along the Danube, and we write every quest for its own city.

The Takeaways

Teams choose their own order of missions, so they have to agree on a plan quickly, split up tasks and change course when something does not work. The teams that win are rarely the fastest walkers. They are the teams that talk clearly, share what they find and trust each other's calls.

The local missions take people out of their comfort zone and into conversation with the city. Colleagues who rarely work together find out how each of them thinks and decides, and quieter team members often shine when the task is a language puzzle or a clue hidden in history.

The live leaderboard keeps every team in the race until the final code, which builds energy that carries into the evening program. In the short debrief, teams name one habit that helped them plan and adapt, and one habit they want to bring back to the office.

For leaders, the quest also offers a rare view of how teams behave when nobody is managing them, which often sparks useful conversations about trust and autonomy back at work.

Program flow

  1. Welcome and kick-off · 0–15 min

Teams meet at a central riverside point, receive their team name and open the quest on their phones. The facilitator explains the rules, the scoring and the safety basics, and shows how hints work. Every team starts with the same mission list but chooses its own route.

  2. First missions · 15–60 min

Teams head out along the Pest bank, near the Parliament and the riverside promenade. Early missions are quick photo and history tasks that help the team find its rhythm, agree on roles and decide whether to split up or stay together.

  3. Across the river · 60–120 min

Teams cross to Buda and climb toward the Castle district. Missions now need local help: learning a Hungarian phrase, finding a story behind a statue or tasting something from a market stall. The live leaderboard shows every team where it stands.

  4. Final code · 120–150 min

Teams return to the riverside finish point and combine the clues they collected to crack one last code. Teams that shared information well along the way usually solve it fastest, while others race to fill the gaps.

  5. Results and debrief · 150–180 min

The leaderboard is revealed with the best photos and videos of the day. The facilitator leads a short debrief on planning, adapting and sharing the work, and each team names one habit to bring back to the office.

The Phoenix debrief

The game ends. The learning starts.

Every Phoenix program closes with a guided debrief. These are the questions for Danube Quest: Budapest:

  1. How did we choose our route, and who made the call?
  2. When did our plan change, and how did we decide?
  3. Who found the key clues, and how did they reach the rest of the team?
  4. Which local mission pushed us furthest out of our comfort zone?
  5. What one habit from today will we use at work next week?

Frequently asked questions

Do we need special equipment?

No. Teams play on their own smartphones. We send the joining details before the event, and our team helps anyone who gets stuck at the start.

How far do teams walk?

The route is compact, usually three to five kilometres at an easy pace. Teams decide how much ground they cover, and shortcuts are always possible.

What if it rains?

We keep indoor missions ready and can move the route to covered places such as the Great Market Hall. The quest runs in light rain, and we pause for storms.

Can we add our company messages?

Yes. Missions can include your values, products or event theme alongside the city challenges, so the fun also carries your key messages.

How many people can take part?

From ten to three hundred guests, in teams of four to eight. Large groups start in waves from the same point so the route never feels crowded.

Can we run it in other cities?

Yes. We write a new quest for each city, including Vienna, Singapore, Hanoi and our North American destinations.
