Strategy does not reach the front line

Sound familiar?

  • “People follow plans without understanding the trade-offs behind them.”
  • “Teams struggle to turn big strategy into daily decisions.”
  • “Choices get reopened again and again instead of being owned.”

The Experience

Strategy Sprint turns a conference room into a fast decision course. Teams move through a sequence of business gates, and each one holds a choice about a growing company — where to invest, what to cut, which market to enter. No gate opens until the team commits.

At every gate teams get a short brief and must agree one decision to move on. The app logs their choice on the shared strategy board and releases the next gate. There is no going back, so teams must think ahead and own each call.

As the board fills, every team’s path becomes visible. In the finale the facilitator reveals which routes actually paid off against a model answer, so the fastest team is not always the winner — the sharpest strategy is.

It runs for about two hours indoors, for ten to three hundred people in teams of five to six, and fits neatly inside a conference agenda. We run it at your venue or ours.

The Takeaways

Each gate asks teams to turn a messy brief into one clear decision, fast. That is the core of strategy work: choosing what not to do. People who like to keep options open have to commit, and the board makes every choice visible and accountable.

Because decisions build on each other, a weak early call limits later ones. Teams learn to think a few moves ahead and to sense-check each other before locking a gate. It mirrors how strategy really flows from one decision into the next at work.

Comparing routes against a model answer at the end turns the game into learning. Teams see why some paths paid off and others stalled, and the lesson sticks because they lived the choices rather than hearing them in a slide.

In the debrief we link the sprint to work: how the team framed choices, committed and looked ahead. Each group leaves with two or three habits for faster, clearer decisions, and HR receives a short written summary within three working days.

Program flow

  1. Welcome & briefing · 0–15 min

Teams form at tables, meet the company scenario they will steer, and learn how gates, decisions and the shared strategy board work. A quick practice gate shows how a committed choice unlocks the next brief before the clock starts.

  2. Decision gates, round one · 15–55 min

Teams work through the opening gates, each a short business brief needing one agreed decision. The app logs every choice on the board and releases the next gate. Early calls shape which options stay open later, so teams must look ahead.

  3. Market shock & regroup · 55–70 min

A sudden change to the scenario tests the paths chosen so far. Teams reassess, decide how to respond and realign on strategy before the harder second round, where decisions carry more weight.

  4. Decision gates, round two · 70–100 min

The later gates build directly on earlier ones, rewarding teams that planned a coherent route. The board now shows every team's path, and the tension rises as groups commit their final, highest-stakes decisions.

  5. Reveal & results · 100–110 min

The facilitator compares each route against a model answer, showing which strategies paid off and why. The winning team is the one whose decisions, not just its speed, held together best across the course.

  6. Debrief & HR summary · 110–120 min

A guided debrief links the sprint to work: how the team framed choices, committed and looked ahead. Each group notes two or three habits, and we capture the themes for the HR summary sent within three working days.

The Phoenix debrief

The game ends. The learning starts.

Every Phoenix program closes with a guided debrief. These are the questions for Strategy Sprint:

  1. Which decision was hardest to commit to, and why?
  2. How did an early choice limit or open your later options?
  3. When the scenario changed, how did you adjust your strategy?
  4. Where did your route differ most from the model answer?
  5. What is one way your team will make clearer decisions at work?

Frequently asked questions

How many people can take part?

From ten up to three hundred, in teams of five to six. Because the app runs every gate, it scales inside one room by adding tables.

How long does it take?

About two hours, including the briefing, both rounds, the reveal and the debrief. It fits neatly into a half-day conference agenda.

Do people need business experience?

No. The briefs are written to be clear to anyone, and the model answer explains the thinking, so mixed teams and junior staff take part fully.

Can we run it indoors at a conference?

Yes. It is designed for a conference room and needs only tables, a screen and sound. It works well as an energising afternoon session.

Can it be customised for us?

Yes. We can base the scenario on your industry or a real strategic question. Custom scenarios need about three weeks' lead time.

What do we receive afterwards?

A guided debrief on the day and a written HR summary of the themes within three working days, which you can use in follow-up sessions.
