Community Service Project Building Toilet
Improving School Hygiene And Health In Rural Vietnam
The Community Service Project Building Toilet is a service-learning program designed for international schools seeking to support essential sanitation infrastructure in rural Vietnam. The project focuses on constructing a clean, safe, and hygienic restroom facility for an elementary school in Ben Tre Province, where existing toilets are severely damaged or no longer usable.
This five-day community service program is part of Phoenix Destinations’ Educational Tours portfolio and can be extended with cultural and travel exploration following project completion.

Project Brief
The primary objective of the Community Service Project Building Toilet is to construct a functional restroom facility for an elementary school serving approximately 250 students and teachers.
Due to long-term erosion, damage, and lack of maintenance, the current sanitation facilities no longer meet basic hygiene standards. The new restroom will provide students and teachers with safe access to sanitation, supporting daily comfort, dignity, and a healthier learning environment.
All technical construction work is supervised by experienced local builders, with student participation focused on supportive, age-appropriate tasks.
The Need For School Sanitation
Access to clean sanitation facilities is a fundamental requirement for a healthy school environment. In many rural areas of Vietnam, limited funding and infrastructure challenges result in unsafe or unusable toilets, affecting both health and school attendance.
This project aims to:
Reduce health risks associated with poor sanitation and limited toilet access
Improve daily comfort and focus for students and teachers
Support hygiene education and responsible water use within the community
Demonstrate the importance of environmental protection, particularly clean water preservation
In addition to infrastructure improvement, the project offers international student participants meaningful interaction with the local community through shared effort and cultural exchange.
Student Engagement And Project Activities
Participants support the construction process through supervised, non-technical activities appropriate to age and ability.
Typical activities include:
Clearing and leveling the construction area using locally sourced soil
Digging foundation holes for the toilet system under supervision
Transporting bricks, sand, gravel, and cement from delivery vehicles
Assisting with cement mixing and material preparation
Supporting finishing tasks such as painting walls and doors
Helping install roofing materials and design the toilet entrance area
Professional builders handle all structural and technical construction work to ensure safety and quality.
