Mekong School Sanitation Project
A Service Learning Program For Schools In Vietnam
Overview
The Mekong School Sanitation Project is an educational service-learning program designed for international schools seeking meaningful, well-managed community engagement in Vietnam. Set in the rural areas of the Mekong Delta, the project focuses on improving basic sanitation facilities in local schools while providing students with hands-on learning, cultural immersion, and real-world understanding of sustainability and public health.
This project forms part of Phoenix Destinations’ Educational Tours portfolio and can be delivered as a standalone five-day service program or combined with a broader educational travel itinerary in Vietnam.

Project Background
In several rural communities across the Mekong Delta, small kindergartens and primary schools continue to face challenges related to basic sanitation infrastructure. Limited access to safe, child-friendly toilets and handwashing facilities affects daily comfort, hygiene practices, and the overall learning environment.
The Mekong School Sanitation Project addresses this challenge through carefully planned, school-approved construction and improvement activities, carried out in close cooperation with local authorities, school leaders, and professional builders. The goal is to support healthier learning spaces while ensuring respectful, ethical engagement with host communities.
The Five-Day Service Learning Experience
The core of the project is a structured five-day service-learning program. Students stay in local homestays or small eco-lodges and travel each day by bicycle or boat to nearby school sites.
All technical construction work is handled by experienced local master builders. Student participation is non-technical, age-appropriate, and focused on supportive tasks and learning activities.
Typical project components include:
Assisting with material preparation and simple building support tasks
Supporting hygiene awareness activities such as handwashing education
Engaging in guided interaction with teachers and community members
Daily reflection sessions connecting on-site experience with learning objectives
The program concludes with a formal handover to the school and student-led reflections on impact and learning.
Educational Value And Learning Outcomes
The Mekong School Sanitation Project is aligned with international service-learning frameworks and global education objectives.
Global Citizenship And Social Responsibility
Students explore how local infrastructure challenges connect to broader global issues such as health, education access, and inequality.
Sustainability And Public Health Awareness
The project introduces students to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) principles and their role in creating healthy school environments.
Leadership, Teamwork, And Communication
Working in diverse teams fosters collaboration, adaptability, and shared responsibility.
Cultural Understanding And Ethical Engagement
