About

In Grand Prix Garage, teams construct an almost full-size racing car from a self-assembly kit within a tight time frame.

Once the car is built, teams decorate it so it will stand out on the track, adding colours, sponsors and team branding of their own design. Every team wants its car to look as fast as it goes.

Then the race day moment arrives. Teams line their cars up on the starting grid, the chequered flag flies, and the cars are off, each with one team member at the wheel while teammates push it down the track.

Pit stops and quick changes can win or lose the race, so teams practise to sharpen their routine. In a spectacular awards ceremony, the top three teams take their place on the podium.

Learning outcomes

Teams must allocate roles and tasks effectively and work closely together across different skills so the build goes to plan and finishes on time. Clear roles stop people from getting in each other's way as the car takes shape.

It is a challenging project that needs the commitment and engagement of every team member to succeed.

Teams use their creative and artistic skills to style their car, giving everyone a chance to put their stamp on the final design. The finished cars are often as memorable for their style as for their speed.

Because the final race can be won or lost on fast pit stops, teams practise and refine their process, learning how small improvements add up. The race itself fuels a healthy competitive spirit between teams, and the podium moment gives everyone something to celebrate.
