About

Mission Machine Makers is an innovative team activity in which teams design and build a robot, purpose-made to complete a set task, from a wide range of available components.

Teams receive a list of tasks, some competitive and some collaborative, that their robot needs to complete. Reading the tasks carefully at the start saves a lot of rebuilding later.

They then design their robot, matching the available components to the skills it will need. Teams choose the right motors, MDF chassis, chassis covers, and electric and electronic parts to give their machine the best chance of success.

Once built, each team trials its robot to see whether it can complete the required task. Finally, teams come together to watch each other’s creations in action and celebrate every robot that rises to the challenge.

Learning outcomes

Mission Machine Makers develops discussion, planning and decision-making skills from the moment teams start shaping ideas for their robot.

Creative thinking and resource management come into play as teams decide how to make their robot stand out for its task with the parts available. Every component choice involves a trade-off, so teams must listen to different ideas and agree quickly.

Through building and then trialling, teams learn to apply design thinking, testing what works and improving their robot step by step. A failed trial is not the end, just useful information for the next attempt.

The finished robot is proof of successful innovation, creativity and, above all, effective team dynamics. Watching every team's machine take on its task gives the whole group a shared sense of curiosity and achievement.
