About

Wildlife Haven Builders is a socially responsible team activity in which teams build sustainable, eco-friendly bird boxes, insect hotels and bat boxes.

First, teams complete eco challenges on tablets to earn the sustainable materials they need. The challenges are fun, creative, mental and physical, with varying levels of difficulty, and teams place their talent where it counts by choosing the bird, bat and insect challenges they can do best.

Decisive leadership, strategy and effective communication are everything, as teams can gain an advantage by juggling several tasks at once.

With their materials stockpiled, teams divide roles and produce three wildlife habitats. Guided by 3D plans, they build and then decorate the timber structures to set criteria. All the finished boxes can be donated to your local community, a school or another institution.

Learning outcomes

Wildlife Haven Builders is a fun, reflective, practical and inclusive activity that creates local impact and a positive shared experience.

Participants learn about their local ecology and the effect of human activity on populations of birds, bats and insects, and discover which positive actions help those populations grow.

The challenges offer a relaxed, informal way for colleagues to get to know each other, break the ice and explore team dynamics. To succeed, teams must weigh up risk and reward, and with the clock ticking, people need to speak up about which challenges they can confidently complete.

Trust builds as challenges are completed successfully, and individuals learn to appreciate each other's abilities. Seeing the finished habitats go to a good home gives the day a lasting purpose.
