Domino Effect Machine
Build your device, link it to the next and set off one giant cascade.

About
In Domino Effect Machine, teams work together to create one complex, life-size contraption. Each team builds a device that performs a simple task and links it to the next team’s device, so that activating one triggers the next in sequence.
Teams test and rework their device again and again to make sure it will function properly every time.
They then collaborate with the neighbouring teams to make sure there is a perfect flow from their machine to the next, until every device is ready to work as part of one complete cascade of cause and effect.
When everything is ready, the first team sets off its device, which triggers the next team’s creation, and so on until a giant cascade has travelled all the way around the room, ending in a wonderfully simple yet spectacular final action.
Learning outcomes
Domino Effect Machine works like a real-life project, with teams constrained by limited time and resources. Team dynamics and resource management are put to the test in the planning phase, as the design is divided into small segments and people and materials are split into smaller working groups.
Teams draw on problem solving, creativity and communication to agree a realistic scope for their device.
The build and testing phases call for coordination not only between teams, but also between different technical skills and project management approaches. Persistence matters, as most devices need several attempts before they work reliably.
The activity transforms thinking, motivates everyone towards excellence and makes sure every person is engaged. Watching the full cascade run for the first time is a moment of shared triumph that teams remember long after the event.
Program flow
-
Briefing
Teams learn how the giant contraption will work and which part of the sequence they are responsible for.
-
Plan the device
Teams design a device that performs a simple task and agree how it will connect to the next team.
-
Build and test
Teams construct their device, then test and rework it until it works reliably every time.
-
Link the teams
Neighbouring teams join their devices and check the hand-over from one machine to the next.
-
The big run
The first device is triggered and the cascade travels around the room to its spectacular final action.
