Model Metropolis
Design your zone, connect the roads and rails, and create a whole city together.

About
In Model Metropolis, each team designs a section of a giant model city. The city has zones such as industrial, residential, leisure and business districts, linked by infrastructure like roads, rail and waterways.
Teams work on their own section but must collaborate with the others, taking a whole-city approach so that the design stays consistent across the zones and transport networks flow smoothly into the sections next door. Every team knows its zone will sit alongside others, so neighbours check in constantly as the city takes shape.
Using a wide range of materials, teams create an imaginative city that is both functional and good to look at, with every street and station planned to fit.
When time is up, teams join all the sections together and celebrate their success in working towards a common goal, standing back to admire the finished metropolis.
Learning outcomes
Teams develop a common vision and a shared strategy, then put it into action using creativity and strong project management skills.
Planning and strategy through effective communication between teams are essential to make sure the zones of the city connect and flow. A road that ends at the edge of one zone has to meet a road in the next.
Creativity within a structured design framework keeps the city functional, practical and beautiful, while resource and time management are essential to finishing the project on time.
Model Metropolis is a fun, memorable shared experience that relies on engagement from every individual, good team dynamics and collaboration across the whole group. It is a vivid reminder that the best results come when every department builds with the whole city in mind.
