Community Service Project Building Bridge
Creating Safe Access And Connectivity In Rural Vietnam
The Community Service Project Building Bridge is a service-learning program designed for international schools seeking to contribute to essential infrastructure development in rural Vietnam. Set in underserved communities of the Mekong Delta, the project focuses on constructing a durable cement bridge to replace unsafe temporary bamboo crossings.
This five-day community service program is part of Phoenix Destinations’ Educational Tours portfolio and may be extended with cultural and travel exploration after project completion.

Project Brief
The primary objective of the Community Service Project Building Bridge is to construct a cement bridge over a local canal in a community with very limited resources. The bridge is designed to provide safe, long-term access for pedestrians, bicycles, and motorbikes.
All technical construction work is supervised by experienced local builders. Student participation is focused on supportive, non-hazardous tasks that contribute meaningfully to the project while ensuring safety.
The Need For Safe Crossings
The Mekong Delta is characterized by wetlands and thousands of canals that play a vital role in transportation and agriculture. While waterways are essential for daily life, they also create significant barriers for local residents moving by foot or bicycle.
In many villages, people rely on narrow bamboo bridges that are inexpensive but unstable and dangerous, especially for children, the elderly, and during the rainy season.
A permanent cement bridge will:
Allow children and adults to cross canals safely
Provide children with shorter and safer routes to school
Enable bicycles and motorbikes to transport fruit, rice, and goods more efficiently
Support local economic activity and daily mobility
Student Engagement And Project Activities
Participants engage in supervised, age-appropriate activities that support the bridge construction process.
Typical activities include:
Assisting with cutting and positioning steel reinforcement rods
Supporting the preparation of concrete frames
Mixing cement, sand, and gravel to create mortar
Assisting with the casting of concrete bridge plates
Supporting the placement of concrete components under supervision
Preparing access paths leading to the bridge
Participating in simple decorative and finishing tasks
Professional builders manage all structural and technical aspects of the construction.
